Have you heard conflicting ideas about whether to take a multivit or not?
In a nutshell taking a multivit prevents shortfalls of essential vitamins and minerals in the general population. You’ve probably heard from health professionals that you can get all the nutrients you need from the food you eat. This just isn’t the case. Firstly, people generally don’t eat that healthily, and if they do, the food they eat has nowhere near the nutrition in it than food used to. Soils are completely depleted in all nutrients apart from the fertilizers added to the soil by farmers in the form of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Multivitamins give you that boost of nutrients to fill the gaps in modern day diets.
Just to add if you are taking any single supplements, you could be creating a detrimental imbalance in your body if the co factors are not present to process it. A multivitamin should be the foundation of any supplement regime to make sure all nutrients required to complete metabolic processes are plentiful and available.
Here are some other great reasons to love multivitamins:
Improve short term memory
Boost energy levels
Reduce telomere shortening (see Dr Pete’s blog)
Improve hair, skin and nails
Boost mood and manage physiological stress
As you might expect, not all multivitamins are made equally. There’s a lot of cheap, synthetic versions out there that could be doing more harm than good. For example folic acid is used a lot in cheaper versions. It is the synthetic version of methylfolate. 20% of us have a gene mutation that prevents us from converting folic acid to methylfolate. In this case folic acid can not be processed and can build up to toxic levels in the body. There’s a reason why some multivitamins are dirt cheap! Always look for bioactive ingredients, they are more expensive but well worth it for your health.
Of course the barefoot nutrition optimum multivitamin is full of bioactive ingredients with the added benefit of zero artificial additives and 100% natural pullulan capsule. There is no better multivitamin on the market!
